Why EEG services are so essential and how we're set up?
About EEG
Electroencephalography is one of the oldest ways to study the brain in real time. However over the last two decades, the advances in EEG technology have allowed better real time interpretation of brain data. While most associate EEGs with a test to detect the presence or absence of seizures, the role of EEGs in evaluation patients in the ICU and those with mental status changes is changing dramatically.
EEGs in care of patients with neurological disease
One of the most common uses of EEGs are in patients with epilepsy. Routine EEGs generally last about 25 minutes. A growing trend is to observe seizures while the patient is being recorded with EEGs. This requires prolonged EEG recording and review. Most hospitals or physician offices find this a challenge to arrange and monitor.
In addition to patient with seizures, the ICU is another area where EEG services are rapidly increasing. Beyond the neurological examination, especially in a comatose patient, there is no real time monitoring of a patient's brain condition. EEG monitoring is paving the way for future real time display of patient's brain condition.
New research is also showing applications of EEGs in patients with autism as well as declining cognitive function. Changes in EEGs patterns and coherence can lead to greater insight about the progression of the underlying disease condition.
